Richard J. Swift, Q.C
Richard is a native of British Columbia and grew up in the Vancouver area. He obtained his B.A. degree from Simon Fraser University and, in 1975, received his LL.B. from the University of British Columbia. He articled in Vancouver and continued to practice there after his call to the Bar in 1976. He moved to Courtenay in 1977, and in 1978 joined with Azim Datoo to form Swift Datoo. Richard is the Managing Partner of the firm.

Richard has been active in professional associations, as a member of numerous committees and the executive of the B.C. Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, as a member of the Provincial Council of the B.C. Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, as president of the local bar association, as a lecturer and course designer for the Continuing Legal Education Society (in the area of real property law), and as a member of several Law Society committees. Richard is a past President (and current member) of the Courtenay Rotary Club. He was a founding Director and is a past President of the Comox Valley Community Foundation. He has supported, and continues to support, numerous community charities and fund-raising events.

Richard has served as a member of the Board of Governors of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and was the Chair of the Board for the last two years of his term which ended in 2008. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Land Title and Survey Authority of British Columbia, and the Chair of the Patient Care Quality Review Board for the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

Richard was awarded the designation of Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1989.
